University of Jos School Fees Schedule | Undergraduate & Postgraduate

Following the University of Jos recent increment in what it termed school charges from N27, 000 to N45, 000, and its attendance criticisms, the management of the institution (UNIJOS) has reiterated that there is no going back on the implementation of the new charges once the new session.
Since the increment, students, parents, and guardians had condemned it saying such coming at a time when most families could barely feed.

Since the increment, students, parents, and guardians had condemned it saying such coming at a time when most families could barely feed.

The Management describes the reactions as propaganda and misinformation by some leaders of the Students Union Government saying the act is based on the implementation of the Federal Government approved harmonized charges for all undergraduate Students in All Federal Universities.

The institution’s Registrar/Secretary to Council/Senate, Mr. Monday Danjem, the Management said its attention has been drawn to the media propaganda and  inaccurate information, from some leaders of the Students Union Government of the University
As a matter of fact, the University Management feels compelled to put the issues in clear perspective so that the public is not misled. The University of Jos Management was in receipt of a letter from the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC)

Conveying the newly approved schedule of harmonized school charges to Senate/Governing Councils of all Federal Universities for immediate implementation. “The directive contained in the letter followed a recommendation made by a Committee constituted by the Honourable Minister of Education comprising the NUC Executive Secretary; Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors; Chairman, Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellor, was mandated to review and harmonize the schedule of miscellaneous charges for Undergraduate Students in all Federal Universities.

Moreover, even though Management secured the approval for the implementation of the new school charges structure in the University, it was later agreed that there should be a phased implementation of the policy due to the prevailing situation in the University at the time. Since the implementation of that resolution, it is apparent that the economic situation of the country has taken a downward turn raising crucially the cost of maintenance of the student.

The University of Jos does not charge Tuition Fees as is being erroneously said. Students are required to pay school charges that are approved by Government and captured in the budget. Every item in the School charge structure is tied to a specific cost for the services provided e.g. Hostel Maintenance, Students Health Insurance, Library, ICT Bandwidth and Network Maintenance, I.D. Card among several others.

This is a verifiable fact that is clearly listed in the University’s school charges schedule. It added, based on the increase in the cost of most good and services in the country, it is no longer pragmatic to continue with the old school charges and still expect to successfully run the University on a sustainable basis.

In the line of this, the University incurs huge expenditure in the effort to provide a conducive learning atmosphere for all its Students.  the University is virtually left unaided to cater for its upkeep. “Such necessary services rendered to the University like cleaning services, Electricity and other utilities, Accreditation expenses, Printing and Stationery, Examination Expenses, Subscription to Academic/Professional Bodies have to be paid for at great expense to the University even as the cost for such goods and services are frequently being hiked.

“The University was paying a monthly charge of Twelve Million Naira (N12,000,000) for electricity supply. This has recently been increased to Twenty-Three Million Naira (N23,000,000) per month. The University is now saddled with the responsibility of sourcing for how it can make up for the shortfall.
By implementing the new school charges structure of N45,000 across a board, the University has done nothing illegal nor has it gone contrary to Government regulations. Indeed, the University is doing the needful by complying with a clearly spelled out and properly conveyed directive of the Federal Government.”
It would be recalled that since the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Sabastian Maimako announced the review of the fees, from N27,000 to N45,000, citing dwindling budgetary allocations, rising bills and the need to upgrade some materials, President of the institution’s Students Union Government, SUG had described the new charges as “too harsh” and appealed to the students to “hold-on”. He said, “No student should be in a hurry to pay the new fees.
We are consulting the management to deliberate on the matter and shall communicate the final agreement to everyone. We have not exhausted all the options; we are still appealing and shall continue to meet all stakeholders, we should be responsible, mature and peaceful while supporting the struggle for a downward review of the situation.

JAMB Cut Off 2017: Jamb releases Cut off Marks For Admission 2017/2018

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has fixed minimum cut off marks for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The minimum cut off marks for admissions into universities in Nigeria was set for 120, polytechnics and colleges of education pegged at 100, while that of innovative enterprising institutes was pegged at 110.

Institutions are, however, at liberty to raise their cut off marks for admission above the minimum set by JAMB.

Also, admissions into public degree awarding institutions for the 2017 UTME examination will end on January 15, 2018 while for private institutions, it ends on January 31, 2018.

Also, decisions on first choice candidates by universities will end on October 15, and second choice candidates will end on December 15; after which the remaining students will be available in the market place for other institutions till the January closing dates.

These decisions were taken at the 2017 Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday.

The Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, said a Central Admission Processing System, CAPS, will be used to streamline admission processes among institutions, as it addresses challenges associated with the former approach.

Mr. Oloyede also said that Institutions could conduct dual mode system which involves both manual and the newly introduced CAPS.

He advocated a dynamic educational policy as related to admissions.
“All over the world, there is agitation for dynamic educational policy,” he said. “JAMB only admits for National Diploma, not Higher National Diploma; so why should we use the same requirement for ND and BSC, that is unreasonable parity.”

“We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut off mark.”

He said candidates’ applications to study agriculture was very low while applications to study medicine and health sciences increased.

Speaking on illegal admissions, he said the process is now automated because the Registrar of JAMB must approve all candidates.

“About 17,160 students were admitted without JAMB across institutions in Nigeria,” he said.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, also formerly announced a lift of the ban on the conduct of Post-UTME examination as a prerequisite for admission into tertiary institutions.

“Cancellation of Post- UTME is a mistake,” he said.

He noted that banning of post-UTME led to a lot of irregularities by candidates and some institutions.

The minister explained that with the lifting of the ban on the conduct of the examination, institutions are now at liberty to conduct, while adding that fee for the examination should not exceed N2000.

He explained that the 2016 admission process was a huge success, while expressing optimism that government is working assiduously to make that of 2017 better.

Mr. Adamu noted that government is also making efforts to expand access and ensure equality in the education sector.
He expressed optimism that a substantial number of candidates who sat for the 2017 UTME would gain admission into tertiary institution.

“Over 1.6 million candidates applied for degree courses, over 17,000 for ND as well as NCE,” he said.
